The Diné—the traditional name for the Navajo people—are internationally known for their weavings. In this hands-on class, we develop an appreciation for the unique designs and techniques of Diné weaving by creating a small rug on a traditional upright loom.
We learn about traditional ways of preparing the wool, including carding, spinning, and using vegetable, natural, and aniline dyes. We also learn how to warp an upright loom and we cover basic weaving techniques.
No weaving experience is necessary; we each go home with the rug we have made, a traditional handmade loom, and a new appreciation for this traditional art.
$100 materials fee for wool and loom; include when you register.
Marilou Schultz is a full-blooded Navajo weaver specializing in classic styles. She recently began experimenting with what she calls her “diversity” weavings, using variegated wool for unique effects. She offers workshops and demonstrations at schools and museums nationwide. navajorugsart.com
