Upon completion, participants will be able to:
  • Define negotiation and recognize its pervasiveness in daily life
  • Classify common patterns in negotiation and explain why people often get stuck
  • Analyze their general conflict tendencies in light of the negotiation framework
  • Evaluate their own role in conflicts as they take place and design a more constructive way to behave
  • Empathize with people who have different negotiation styles from their own
  • Advocate for their own interests and needs in a productive way
  • Listen effectively to others
  • Collaborate with others to solve problems together
  • Formulate action plans to improve their skills after the workshop
Choose one track at time of registration. Participants also meet daily as a group to experience other work-shop leaders and the community as a whole. The workshop is appropriate for professionals and laypeople alike.

Track One

Beyond Yes

Deeper Wisdom & the Art of Negotiation

The flagship program created at the Harvard Negotiation Insight Initiative, this core training explores the interplay between negotiation and the ideas and practices of wisdom traditions, moving negotiators from competence toward mastery. We learn a system called “archetypes and autobiography” to help us map the obstacles in our way and paths to our success. We can then apply these practices to all of life’s negotiations.

Faculty Erica Ariel Fox teaches negotiation at Harvard Law School and is the founder of the Harvard Negotiation Insight Initiative. Recognized as a pioneer for integrating great wisdom traditions and spiritual practices into the negotiation and conflict field, she works with business and public sector leaders around the world as a partner of Mobius Executive Leadership.

Mark Thornton has studied insight traditions from a number of wisdom masters for the past 25 years and applies these practices in everyday business situations. Author of Meditation in a New York Minute: Super Calm for the Super Busy, Thornton teaches corporate leaders meditation practices to enhance perforance and deepen their satisfaction on the job and in their personal life. yescalm.org

Track Two

From Impasse to Breakthrough

Harnessing the Power of Mediation

In this workshop, two leading mediation practitioners explode stereotypes and challenge conventional wisdom about mediation; urge us to take risks and transcend the safe route; and help us find a new kind of courage as a mediator. We explore how to lead others through a dynamic conflict process while fearlessly giving our deepest gifts. The workshop is appropriate for lawyers, mediators, human resource specialists, consultants and coaches, therapists, and other professionals who work with conflict.

Faculty

Douglas Noll, JD, is a peacemaker and former trial lawyer. A Fellow with the International Academy of Mediators, he has published extensively on mediation and peacemaking and has trained judges, lawyers, and mediators throughout the United States.

Lee Jay Berman has trained thousands of mediators from the United States and abroad. He is director of Pepperdine University’s Mediating the Litigated Case program in Malibu, California and is a Fellow with the In-ternational Academy of Mediators.

Track Three

Masterful Conversations

Authentic Communication & Right Speech

This training, taught by two leading communication and coaching experts, blends the best of Buddhist teachings and meditation practices with Western psychology and communication theory. We examine Buddhist teachings on right speech and nondual awareness, learning to speak with elegance and courage because it is the right thing to do. We also sharpen our intimacy skills, become emotionally clear, and deepen our ability to speak with wisdom, compassion, and strength.

Alex Trisoglio, PhD, is a coach to executives and boards in the public and private sectors, including Fortune 500 companies. A student of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, he teaches Buddhist philosophy and meditation and translates and edits Buddhist texts.

Amy Elizabeth Fox, MA, is the chief executive officer of Mobius Executive Leadership, a premier consulting company that emphasizes personal transformation and organizational culture change. A psychologist and social entrepreneur, she leads trainings for executive teams in Fortune 500 companies.
