This program gives you the chance to do what you have been promising yourself for years: to finally take a break and dedicate time to your health, relaxation, and rejuvenation. The Omega Wellness Week is one of our more popular programs because it is a great way for you to experience the richness of Omega's curriculum and to develop a firm commitment to self-care and optimal health practices that you can bring back to your home and work environments. It is designed for both beginners and those with considerable experience in wellness and holistic health practices.

This program is also appropriate for those who want to make both personal and professional changes.

Coordinated by Stephan Rechtschaffen, M.D., and Marc Cohen, M.A., coauthors of Vitality and Wellness, the Omega Wellness Week allows you to enjoy the program at your own pace and level of expertise. Each day, you attend core program workshops (described here) in the morning. Afternoon sessions offer specialized topics in smaller groups and more personalized interactions with the faculty. You are encouraged to take an active role in scheduling your time to allow yourself to slow down, enjoy nature, and get to know your own rhythms again.

During the week you learn:

Principles & Practices of Holistic Health

This core program of the Wellness Week provides a medically grounded understanding of holistic health and a strategy for putting your best intentions into a practical and sustainable health plan. It ties together all of the practices and techniques that are introduced during the week and addresses your specific and unique health and lifestyle concerns so you remain energized and healthy long after you have left Omega.

Stress Reduction & Mindfulness Meditation

You already have an inherent ability to slow down, regain perspective, and achieve a sense of well-being in the midst of life's constant changes and challenges. In this core program, based on the popular Stress Reduction Program at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, you learn meditation techniques to help you develop a relaxed, nonjudgmental awareness. You gain awareness of the many forces in your life that contribute to stress and how both stress and relaxation can impact your health. As you look deeply into the habits and patterns that impoverish your ability to handle stress and the ups and downs of daily life, you begin to tap into the rich reserves of vitality within.

Timeshifting

Based on Stephan Rechtschaffen's nationally acclaimed book, Timeshifting: Creating More Time to Enjoy Your Life, this core program helps you examine how your current relationship with time may be making you sick and miserable, and teaches you how to develop and practice new and creative approaches for living more fully in the present moment. Learning the art and skill of timeshifting can have a profound impact on your life and health.

Nutrition for Health & Healing

Each individual has unique nutritional needs and challenges, and separating fact from fiction is not always easy. We help you get a thorough overview of practical nutrition, including the role of nutrition in health and healing, vitamins and supplements, special diets, effective weight management, and simple, low-fat, whole foods cooking. You also experience firsthand the joys of healthy eating with each meal as a guest at Omega.

Yoga, Movement & Body Awareness

This fitness program is based on the belief that exercise should feel like a natural and joyous expression of self. Designed to meet you at your own level, with an emphasis on balance and noncompetitive participation, the program includes yoga, creative movement, and optional early morning tai chi and aerobic walking.

Upon completion of this course, participants applying for continuing education credit will be able to demonstrate that they have the ability to:
  • define Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and list three elements of its practice;
  • identify several stress-related illnesses and understand how stress can trigger them;
  • be able to define stress and understand how stress can become harmful;
  • be able to define and identify "toxic emotions";
  • learn about the relationship between MBSR and cognitive therapy and how this can be applied to behavioral and lifestyle changes;
  • learn how MBSR can be used with individuals suffering from a variety of physical and mental disorders;
  • learn and practice at least three basic MBSR techniques and understand how they can be useful for their patients and for themselves;
  • explore the role of exercise and whole foods nutrition in both physical emotional health; and
  • explore concepts and techniques of Timeshifting and how it can improve one's physical and emotional health.
A detailed schedule will be available during the introductory session at the beginning of each week. Wellness Weeks begin at 8:30 a.m. on Mondays. Arrive at Omega Sunday for an 8:00 p.m. orientation.
