This year marks the 800th anniversary of the birth of the great Sufi mystic, Jalal-ud-Din Rumi. Born in what is now called Afghanistan, he composed over the course of his life 3,500 odes, 2,000 quatrains, and a vast spiritual epic called the Mathnawi. He died at sunset in southern Turkey, and the rays of his light have spread around the world; he is now the most widely read spiritual writer in America.

This weekend is an opportunity for those who love Rumi's poetry to gather together in an atmosphere of sacred celebration. Andrew Harvey, who leads us on this extraordinary journey, says, "Increasingly, Rumi is being recognized as the unique spiritual genius he is, as someone who fused at the highest level the intellect of a Plato, the vision, passion, and soul-force of a Christ or Buddha, and the extraordinary literary gifts of a Shakespeare. He is not only the world's greatest mystic poet but also an essential guide to the new planetary spiritual renaissance that is slowly emerging from the ruins of our civilization."

During the weekend, Harvey shares with us Rumi's most incandescent poems and leads practices from the depths of the Sufi tradition that help cultivate sacred passion. On Saturday afternoon, Rumi scholar Fariba Enteshari unveils Rumi's teachings about the inward journey. "This journey," she says, "takes us from the path of duality to the path of unity. Body, mind, and soul unify only when we pay attention to the world within us." And on Saturday evening the journey continues as the nation's foremost Rumi translator, Coleman Barks, is joined by cellist David Darling for a living experience of Rumi's ecstatic words.

When you do things for your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.
