Famed photographer Dennis Stock, world renowned for his iconic images of James Dean in the 1950s, offers this workshop to help amateur and professional photographers alike capture what he calls “the articulate image.”
We begin our week with a retrospective presentation of his work, which illustrates the idea of the articulate
image—an image taken with a refined eye so that the feelings of the subjects appear in the picture taken.
“A photograph is possibly the purest statement of essences,” Stock says. “It’s important not to be rigid, to allow a process of discovery to take place. For in the best circumstances, it will make our heart race.” With this in mind, we review and critique our work produced before the course. Then, we spend time photographing and evaluate our progress.
Digital cameras only. Please bring a portfolio of no more than 30 digital or print images with you to the
workshop. This workshop is also offered July 13-18.
Dennis Stock’s work has been acquired by most major museum collections, including the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Musee d’Art Moderne in Paris. He is a documentary filmmaker, author of 15
