Sri Dharma Mittra

Sri Dharma Mittra is founder and director of the Dharma Yoga Center, a sanctuary for the study of yoga in New York City since 1974. Know as the “Rock of Yoga” and the “Teacher’s Teacher”- Sri Dharma Mittra has spent most of his life in service to humanity, disseminating ancient classical teachings to help others achieve radiant health and spiritual development. A student of yoga since 1958, Sri Dharma Mittra was eventually accepted and initiated as a sannyasi (one who renounces the world in order to realize God) by his guru, Sri Swami Kailashananda. With total humility, Sri Dharma Mittra embraced the practice of karma yoga, and taught hatha yoga at his guru’s ashram for nearly 10 years.

After more than 45 years, Sri Dharma Mittra continues to teach classical Ashtanga Yoga. He helps students progress quickly to a deep understanding of their true self so they can lead happy and contented lives. He embodies “dharma” (one’s duty) and the virtues of yoga: kindness, patience, humility, fortitude, righteousness, humor, selfless service, ahimsa (nonviolence), vegetarianism, unlimited love, compassion, and understanding for all.

Sri Dharma Mittra is known to yoga students worldwide through his Master Yoga Chart of 908 Postures. In addition to directing the Dharma Yoga Center, he is author of Asanas: 608 Yoga Poses and has produced the Maha Sadhana DVD series. He is a model in Yoga Journal’s book Yoga and Barnes & Noble’s American Yoga and is the subject of the book Dharma Mittra: A Friend to All.

A beloved teacher, Sri Dharma Mittra teaches nationally and internationally and maintains a regular teaching schedule at the Dharma Yoga Center in New York.
